The clean 4-day plan

Use this as the first proposal tonight. It gives each day a different mood, without making the trip feel like homework.

THU PM

Grizzana soft landing

Coffee, drinks, groceries, local walk. Use this page to vote: city, castle, nature, water.

FRI

Bologna: university, old medicine, sacred drama, trattoria

Archiginnasio + Teatro Anatomico, San Petronio, Santa Maria della Vita’s Compianto, then proper Bolognese food.

SAT

La Scola + Rocchetta Mattei at 13:00 + Riola

Morning medieval hamlet, arrive early for the castle, then Aalto’s church / Ponte di Verzuno / easy aperitivo.

SUN

Water day

Best balance: Villaggio della Salute Più. Lower-effort: Valverde Porretta. Bigger adventure: AcquaJoss or Marina di Ravenna beach.

MON

Choose your mood: Ravenna + beach, or lakes + Poranceto

If you want one big finale, do Ravenna mosaics and beach. If you want close and relaxed, do Suviana/Brasimone/Poranceto.

TUE AM

Short local coffee + departure buffer

Keep this light. No ambitious drive unless flights allow a lot of margin.

If you only decide one thing

Pick the water day. That determines whether the trip feels like Apennine Italy, coastal Romagna or full amusement-park energy.

ClosestValverde Porretta

35–45 min, cheap, open, relaxed.

Best balanceVillaggio Salute Più

1h20–1h40, real aqua-park feel.

Most fun/valueAcquaJoss

~2h, slides + wave pool, from €12 online.

Most scenicRavenna beach

Mosaics first, sea after.

Near Grizzana

These are the strongest local picks, especially for Saturday around the 13:00 Rocchetta Mattei ticket.

Rocchetta MatteiFixed Saturday

Rocchetta Mattei

The surreal Moorish-medieval castle of Count Cesare Mattei. Guided visits only, reservation required, perfect as the anchor of the local day.

13:00 ticketguided onlynearby
  • Arrive around 12:30, parking and check-in buffer.
  • No strollers or animals inside, building is labyrinthine.
  • Pair with La Scola before and Riola after.
La Scola medieval hamletBest morning stop

La Scola medieval borgo

A compact medieval hamlet of stone lanes, tower-houses and quiet corners. Very photogenic, very low-commitment.

45–75 mincasual shoes ok
  • Ideal before Rocchetta Mattei.
  • Uneven stone lanes, avoid slippery soles if wet.
  • Don’t expect much food right in the hamlet.
Montovolo sanctuaryViews + sanctuary

Montovolo

Romanesque sanctuary, old crypt, views. Good if everyone can handle a little uneven ground.

15–20 minshort stop
Alvar Aalto church RiolaArchitecture

Riola, Aalto church

A surprisingly Nordic modern stop by Alvar Aalto, perfect given the Norway connection.

after Rocchettaeasy
Poranceto forest museumNature day

Poranceto + Lake Suviana

Forest museum area, short woodland wander, then lake. Treat it as a gentle nature block, not a long CAI hike.

35–45 minlake
Monte SoleSolemn

Monte Sole

Historically important and emotionally heavy WWII memorial landscape. Do a short respectful walk from Il Poggiolo, not the full loop in sandals.

30–40 minheavy history

Bologna day

One full city day is very reasonable. The trick is to keep it focused: University, anatomy, churches, food.

Teatro AnatomicoMust do

Archiginnasio + Teatro Anatomico

The most memorable Bologna stop: University history, the 1637 anatomical theatre, carved wooden amphitheatre and the “Spellati” figures.

book timed ticket40–75 mingreat story
  • Guided and audio tours available, English slots listed by Bologna Welcome.
  • Bulky bags not allowed. Late arrivals may lose entry.
San Vitale mosaic style placeholderArt pick

Santa Maria della Vita

If Alex is artsy, this is the high-impact Bologna art stop: Niccolò dell’Arca’s Compianto sul Cristo Morto, a terracotta “scream in stone”.

San Petronio

Huge civic basilica, unfinished façade, Cassini meridian line and paid chapel route.

Pinacoteca BolognaOptional

Pinacoteca Nazionale

Worth it if the group wants more paintings. Strong Emilian/Bolognese religious art, but check same-day hours and exhibition details.

Food shortlist

Casual: Osteria dell’Orsa, walk-in only. Proper booking: Trattoria Da Me. Central modern trattoria: CasaMerlò.

Water options

Ranked for adults, fun and travel effort from Grizzana Morandi.

Porretta Valverde poolClosest

Valverde Parco Piscine, Porretta

The safest low-effort water day: pool, sun, restaurant/pizzeria/pub, beach volley, simple logistics.

Villaggio della Salute PiuBest balance

Villaggio della Salute Più

Real aqua-park energy in the hills, with pools, slides and thermal-resort context. Better than a basic pool, much closer than Riccione.

1h20–1h4010:00–20:00night Fri/Sat
AcquaJossSlides

AcquaJoss

Classic Romagna waterpark: wave pool, lazy river, Kamikaze, Vortex, Boomerang. Strong value if you accept the drive.

Aquafan RiccioneIconic

Aquafan

The big famous Riccione choice. Maximum energy, longer drive, higher price.

MirabeachSat onward

Mirabeach + Mirabilandia

Water park plus amusement park near Ravenna. Only makes sense if the group wants a full theme-park day.

~2h15opens Jun 13

Ravenna + beach

The best “one more city” day because it gives Alex world-class art and gives everyone the sea afterwards.

Ravenna San Vitale mosaicsUNESCO mosaics

San Vitale + Galla Placidia + Baptistery

Gold Byzantine mosaics, starry blue dome, early Christian architecture. Keep it to the 4- or 5-monument ticket, then leave for the beach.

2h–2h30 drive09:00–19:00 seasontimed slots needed
  • Mandatory timed booking for Galla Placidia and Neonian Baptistery.
  • Microclimate limits: some monuments have 5-minute stays.
Marina di RavennaBeach + drinks

Marina di Ravenna or Punta Marina

Marina is livelier for bars, beach clubs and sunset. Punta Marina is calmer and easier. Use Ravenna parking/shuttle info to avoid ZTL stress.

seaafter mosaicsNavetto Mare

Ravenna food

Ca’ de Vèn in the center for piadina, cappelletti, strozzapreti and wine. Ristorante Alma in Marina di Ravenna for beach dinner.

Best sequence

Leave early, mosaics 09:30–13:00, lunch in Ravenna, beach 15:00–sunset, dinner by the sea or drive home.

Practical notes

The unsexy details that make the plan work.

Shoes and trails

  • Villages, churches, lakeside stops: casual shoes are fine.
  • CAI loops, waterfalls, riverbanks: closed shoes strongly recommended.
  • Choose routes marked T / Tourist, avoid E / EE unless everyone is equipped.

Driving and parking

  • Bologna and Ravenna old centers have ZTLs. Park outside and walk in.
  • Apennine distances look short but roads are winding, add buffers.
  • For Ravenna beach, use official parking/shuttle info where possible.

What I’d pitch to the group tonight

“We have four moods to choose from: Bologna old university and food; Rocchetta Mattei plus medieval villages; a nature/lake day; and one water day, either chill pool, aqua park, or Ravenna beach. Saturday castle is fixed at 13:00, so that day basically plans itself. The big open question is whether Sunday or Monday should be maximum water fun or Ravenna mosaics plus sea.”

Important caveat: opening hours, ticket prices and pool calendars can change, especially in June. This page links the source pages so you can do a same-day check before driving.
